MRI scan waiting times at every NHS and independent provider in England. An MRI scan uses magnets and radio waves to picture soft tissue: the brain, spine, joints and organs. It is the test most people wait longest for, because scanner time is scarce and each scan takes 20 to 60 minutes.
22% of the 359,314 people waiting in England in August 2026 had waited over six weeks. 442,813 tests were done in the month. 226 providers with figures, smallest share over six weeks first.

How long is the wait for an NHS mri scan?
It depends where you are referred. In August 2026, 22% of the 359,314 people waiting for an MRI in England had waited over six weeks.
